Possible Causes
Clogged condensate drain line, Algae buildup in drain trap, Cracked or rusted primary drain pan, Disconnected PVC drain piping
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power to the indoor unit. Water and electricity are a dangerous combination.
Steps:
- 1. Locate drain line: Find the PVC drain exiting the Bryant evaporator coil cabinet or air handler.
- 2. Clear external blockage: At the outside termination, remove any visible debris or insect nests.
- 3. Flush the line: Remove the cleanout cap (if present) near the air handler and pour a mixture of warm water and a small amount of vinegar or mild bleach into the line. Allow it to sit, then flush with more water.
- 4. Use a wet/dry vacuum: At the outside end of the drain, use a wet/dry vacuum to suck out sludge and algae. Seal around the pipe with a rag for better suction.
- 5. Inspect drain pan: Remove the coil access panel and inspect the primary drain pan for cracks or rust-through. If damaged, the pan or entire coil assembly may need replacement.
Note: If your system has a float switch on the drain pan, a clog may also shut down cooling until cleared.
