Possible Causes

High refrigerant pressure due to dirty condenser coil, Blocked outdoor airflow, Faulty high-pressure switch, Overheating compressor, Refrigerant overcharge

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn OFF power at the outdoor disconnect and breaker before working near the condenser fan or electrical compartment.

  • Step 1 – Check airflow: Ensure the outdoor unit (condenser) is not blocked by debris, plants, or covers. Maintain at least 2–3 feet clearance on all sides and clear the top.
  • Step 2 – Clean condenser coil: Remove the top grille if needed. Using a garden hose on low pressure, rinse the coil from inside out to remove dirt. Do not bend fins. Let dry before restoring power.
  • Step 3 – Inspect condenser fan: Confirm the fan spins freely by hand (power OFF). If stiff or noisy, the fan motor may be failing and causing high head pressure.
  • Step 4 – Reset power: Restore power and run the system. If E3 returns quickly, shut it down to avoid compressor damage.
  • Step 5 – Call a technician: High-pressure switch, refrigerant charge, and compressor current draw require gauges and meters. A Carrier technician should check for overcharge, non-condensables, or a failing compressor.
