Possible Causes
Shorted compressor windings, Locked rotor compressor, Failing outdoor fan motor, Faulty inverter module or power board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: This fault involves high voltage and compressor circuits. Turn OFF power at the disconnect and breaker. Do not attempt live electrical testing unless you are qualified.
- Step 1 – Visual inspection: Remove the outdoor unit control panel cover. Look for burnt wires, melted connectors, or signs of arcing on the power PCB or compressor terminals.
- Step 2 – Check fan operation: Restore power briefly and observe if the outdoor fan starts when cooling is demanded. If the fan does not run but the compressor tries to start, the compressor may overheat and trip E5.
- Step 3 – Basic reset: Turn power OFF for 10 minutes to allow internal overloads to reset, then power back ON. If E5 returns immediately, shut down the system.
- Step 4 – Technician service: A Carrier technician should measure compressor winding resistance, insulation, and current draw, and test the inverter/power module. Do not continue to reset and run the unit with repeated E5 errors, as this can permanently damage the compressor.
