Possible Causes
Reversing valve stuck in heat mode on Coleman heat pump, Low refrigerant charge, Failed compressor, Thermostat miswired (O/B signal incorrect)
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn OFF power before accessing outdoor unit or thermostat wiring.
- Confirm mode: Ensure thermostat is set to COOL and temperature is below room temperature.
- Check outdoor unit: Verify the condenser is running. If only the fan runs and not the compressor, see compressor-related steps above.
- Heat pump reversing valve: On heat pump models, verify the O/B wire is correctly connected and configured in the thermostat. Incorrect settings can keep the valve in heat position.
- Listen for valve shift: Switch between heat and cool and listen for the reversing valve shifting. If it never shifts, the coil or valve may be faulty.
- Refrigerant and compressor check: If the system runs but only produces warm air, a technician must check refrigerant pressures and compressor operation.
Warning: Do not attempt to manually force the reversing valve; this can cause leaks.
