Possible Causes

Failed outdoor coil sensor on Coleman heat pump, Sensor not attached to coil, Damaged sensor wiring, Faulty defrost control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn OFF power at the outdoor disconnect and breaker before opening the condenser panel.

  • Locate coil sensor: On Coleman heat pumps, the defrost sensor is typically clipped to the outdoor coil tubing.
  • Check attachment: Ensure the sensor is firmly clipped to the coil. Reattach if loose.
  • Inspect wiring: Follow the sensor leads to the defrost/control board. Look for damage or loose connectors.
  • Test sensor: With power OFF, disconnect the sensor and measure resistance. Compare to the Coleman temperature/resistance chart. Replace if out of spec.
  • Board evaluation: If the sensor is good, the defrost control board may be faulty and require replacement.
  • Reset system: Restore power and clear H2 by cycling the thermostat. Verify normal heat pump operation.

Warning: Do not bypass defrost controls; this can damage the compressor and coil.
