Possible Causes
Low supply voltage or unstable power, Shorted compressor winding, Failing compressor start capacitor or PTC relay, Faulty main control board power stage
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit. The compressor circuit carries high current; only proceed if you are comfortable working with electrical components.
Steps:
- 1. Verify power supply: Use a plug-in voltage tester or multimeter to confirm the outlet provides stable voltage within the range specified on the Danby nameplate (typically 115V or 230V). Avoid using long undersized extension cords.
- 2. Inspect wiring: Remove the rear cover to access the compressor compartment. Check for burnt wires, loose spade connectors, or melted insulation at the compressor terminals and capacitor.
- 3. Check start components: Locate the compressor start capacitor and PTC relay (if used). Look for bulging, leaking, or cracked capacitors. Replace with a Danby-specified capacitor of the same µF rating and voltage.
- 4. Test compressor windings: With the unit unplugged and capacitor discharged, remove the compressor terminal cover. Using a multimeter, measure resistance between the three terminals (C, S, R). None should be open or shorted to ground. If windings are shorted or open, the compressor is defective.
- 5. Inspect main PCB: Look for burnt components or darkened areas near the compressor relay or triac. If damaged, replace the main control board.
- 6. Reassemble and test: After replacing any faulty parts, reassemble, restore power, and test operation. If E5 persists with correct voltage and new start components, professional compressor diagnosis is recommended.
