Possible Causes

Failed compressor start capacitor, Faulty compressor relay or PTC, Open compressor winding, Control board not sending start signal

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the unit and discharge capacitors before touching electrical parts.

Steps:

  • 1. Listen for compressor: When cooling is selected, you should hear a distinct click and a low hum from the compressor. If you never hear this, suspect the start circuit or control board.
  • 2. Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear or side panel to expose the compressor, capacitor, and relay.
  • 3. Inspect capacitor: Look for bulging, leaking, or cracked casing. Replace with a Danby-specified capacitor of the same microfarad (µF) rating and voltage.
  • 4. Check compressor relay/PTC: Remove the relay from the compressor terminals and inspect for burning or rattling pieces. Replace if suspect.
  • 5. Test compressor windings: With wires removed, measure resistance between compressor terminals and to ground. If windings are open or shorted to ground, the compressor is defective and not economical to repair on small units.
  • 6. Control signal: If start components and compressor test good, the main PCB may not be sending power to the compressor and should be replaced.
