Possible Causes
Very dirty air filter, Low blower speed or failing blower motor, Low refrigerant charge, Closed or blocked supply/return vents
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF cooling at the thermostat to prevent compressor damage. Set fan to ON to help thaw the coil.
- Step 1 – Thaw coil: Allow several hours for all ice to melt. Place towels or a pan under the air handler if needed.
- Step 2 – Replace filter: Install a clean filter of the correct size.
- Step 3 – Check vents: Open all supply and return vents and remove obstructions.
- Step 4 – Blower check: Ensure the blower is running at proper speed and not making unusual noises.
- Step 5 – Call technician if repeat: If freeze-up recurs, have a professional check refrigerant charge and system sizing.
