Possible Causes

Blocked condenser airflow, Dirty condenser coil, Faulty condenser fan motor, Overcharged or restricted refrigerant system, Defective high-pressure switch

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the unit and allow it to cool for at least 30 minutes before inspection.

  • 1. Clean condenser area: Remove dust and lint from the rear grille and condenser fins using a soft brush and vacuum. Ensure at least 12–16 inches clearance behind and around the unit.
  • 2. Check exhaust hose (portable units): Ensure the hose is properly connected, not kinked, and within the recommended length. Poor exhaust can cause high pressure.
  • 3. Verify fan operation: Run the unit in FAN mode and confirm the rear/condenser fan runs smoothly. If the fan is not running or is very slow, the fan motor or capacitor may be failing and should be replaced.
  • 4. Reset and test: After cleaning and confirming fan operation, plug the unit back in and test in COOL mode. If E5 returns quickly, stop using the unit.
  • 5. Technician checks: A professional should test the high-pressure switch, refrigerant charge, and look for restrictions or overcharge conditions.
