Fraser-Johnston
Insufficient Cooling Capacity / Performance Degradation
Air conditioner runs but does not cool the home adequately
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Dirty indoor evaporator coil, Dirty outdoor condenser coil, Low refrigerant charge due to leak, Undersized Fraser‑Johnston unit for home load
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power before cleaning coils or opening panels.
- Check thermostat settings: Ensure the thermostat is set to COOL and the temperature is at least 3°F below room temperature. Verify fan is set to AUTO.
- Replace filters: Install new return air filters in the Fraser‑Johnston air handler or furnace.
- Clean coils: Clean both indoor and outdoor coils with appropriate coil cleaner and water rinse.
- Check airflow: Open all supply registers and ensure returns are not blocked by furniture or rugs.
- Measure temperature drop: With the system running 15–20 minutes, measure supply vs. return air temperature. A typical drop is 16–22°F. If much lower, call a technician to check refrigerant charge and system sizing.
