Possible Causes

Dirty outdoor condenser coil, Blocked airflow around Fraser‑Johnston condenser, Failed outdoor fan motor, Overcharged refrigerant or non-condensables in system

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Disconnect power at the outdoor disconnect before working on the condenser.

  • Clean condenser coil: Remove top grille if needed. Use a garden hose (low pressure) to rinse debris from the coil fins from inside out. Avoid bending fins. Do not use a pressure washer.
  • Clear obstructions: Ensure at least 24–36 inches of clearance around the Fraser‑Johnston outdoor unit. Remove leaves, grass, or objects blocking airflow.
  • Check outdoor fan: Restore power and observe the fan. If the compressor runs but the fan does not, shut power off immediately. Inspect the fan motor and capacitor. A swollen or leaking capacitor should be replaced with the same µF rating and voltage.
  • Inspect coil for damage: Severely bent fins or blocked sections can cause high head pressure. Straighten fins with a fin comb if needed.
  • Persistent E3: If the coil is clean and fan is operating but E3 continues, the system may be overcharged or have a restriction. This requires gauges and EPA-certified service.
