Friedrich Insufficient Cooling Capacity / Performance Loss

Unit runs but does not cool the room effectively

Possible Causes

Dirty air filter, clogged evaporator or condenser coil, low refrigerant charge, failing compressor, undersized unit for room load

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn OFF and unplug the unit before cleaning.

Steps to improve cooling:

  • Clean filter: Remove and wash the filter. Let it dry completely before reinstalling.
  • Clean indoor coil: Remove the front cover and gently clean the evaporator coil with a soft brush or vacuum. Use coil cleaner if heavily soiled.
  • Clean outdoor coil: Access the outdoor side and remove debris, lint, and dirt from the condenser coil. Ensure fins are straight and unobstructed.
  • Check airflow: Make sure supply and return vents are not blocked by furniture or curtains.
  • Check mode and setpoint: Confirm the unit is in COOL mode with a set temperature at least 5°F (3°C) below room temperature.
  • Evaluate room size: Compare the unit’s BTU rating to the room size. If the room is significantly larger than recommended, the unit may be undersized.
  • Refrigerant issues: If coils are clean and airflow is good but cooling is still weak, a technician should check refrigerant charge and compressor performance.
