Possible Causes
Mold or mildew on evaporator coil, dirty air filter, standing water in drain pan, clogged drain channel
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit. Wear gloves and a mask if you are sensitive to mold.
Steps:
- 1. Clean filter: Wash the air filter with warm soapy water and let it dry completely.
- 2. Access evaporator: Remove the front cover to expose the evaporator coil and drain pan.
- 3. Clean coil and pan: Use a foaming coil cleaner safe for indoor use. Spray the coil and allow it to drain into the pan. Wipe and rinse the pan to remove slime and debris.
- 4. Clear drain: Ensure the condensate drain hole and channel are clear so water does not stagnate.
- 5. Run fan-only: After cleaning, run the unit in fan-only mode for 30–60 minutes to help dry the coil and reduce odor.
