Possible Causes

Failed evaporator thermistor, Thermistor dislodged from evaporator coil, Broken or shorted thermistor wiring harness, Faulty main control board sensor circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Disconnect power before opening the unit. Sharp metal edges are common inside the chassis; wear cut-resistant gloves.

Steps:

  • Reset: Unplug the unit for 5–10 minutes, then plug back in to see if E2 clears.
  • Access evaporator area: Remove the front grille and filter. Remove screws securing the front cover and gently pull it off to expose the evaporator coil (the cold coil at the front).
  • Locate the evaporator sensor: On GE models, this thermistor is clipped or taped to the evaporator coil tubing, usually near the center or side of the coil, with two small wires leading back to the control board.
  • Check mounting: Ensure the sensor is firmly attached to the coil. If it has fallen off, reattach it using the original clip or aluminum tape so it makes good thermal contact.
  • Inspect wiring: Follow the sensor wires back to the control board. Look for cuts, pinches, or corrosion at the connector. Reseat the connector.
  • Test the thermistor: With the unit unplugged, disconnect the sensor and measure resistance. Compare to GE specifications (commonly ~10kΩ at 77°F). Replace the evaporator thermistor if open, shorted, or out of range.
  • Control board check: If the sensor and wiring are good but E2 persists, the main control board may be defective and should be replaced.

Note: Do not bend or puncture the evaporator tubing; refrigerant leaks require professional service.
