Possible Causes
Blocked condenser airflow (dirty coil, obstructions), Failed condenser fan motor, Outdoor temperature sensor misreading, High ambient temperature combined with poor ventilation
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit. Allow hot components to cool before touching.
Steps:
- Check airflow: Ensure the rear of the unit (condenser side) is not blocked by walls, covers, or debris. Maintain clear space per GE installation instructions.
- Clean condenser coil: Remove the cabinet and gently brush or vacuum dirt from the condenser fins. Do not bend fins.
- Verify fan operation: Spin the condenser fan blade by hand (power off). It should move freely. With power restored briefly, confirm the fan runs when cooling is selected. If not, replace the condenser fan motor.
- Sensor check: Inspect the outdoor thermistor for proper placement and damage. Replace if faulty.
- Re-test: After cleaning and repairs, reassemble, restore power, and test. If F5 persists, the control board may be misreading temperature and should be replaced.
