H1
GE
Defrost Mode / Preheat Protection (Heat Pump)
GE heat pump air conditioner displays H1 and does not immediately provide heat

Possible Causes
Outdoor coil defrost cycle active, Low outdoor temperature causing extended defrost, Sensor misreading coil temperature, Control board logic issue
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Note: On many GE heat pump models, H1 is a normal indication that the unit is in defrost or preheat mode, not a fault.
Steps:
- Wait cycle out: Allow 10–15 minutes for the H1 indication to clear as the unit completes its defrost or preheat cycle.
- Check outdoor coil: If accessible, inspect the outdoor coil for heavy frost or ice buildup. Ensure airflow is not blocked by snow, leaves, or debris.
- Clean coil and clear obstructions: Gently remove debris and ensure proper clearance around the outdoor section.
- If H1 never clears: The defrost sensor or control board may be faulty. Have a technician test the outdoor coil thermistor and defrost control logic and replace the faulty component.
