Possible Causes
Seized fan motor bearings, Failed fan motor capacitor (if separate), Obstructed fan blade, Open fan motor winding
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit. Do not run the compressor without the fan; this can cause overheating.
Steps:
- Spin test: With power off, try spinning the fan blade by hand. It should move freely without grinding.
- Check obstructions: Remove any debris, plastic, or wiring that may be blocking the blade.
- Inspect motor and capacitor: Look for burnt smell or discoloration on the fan motor. If a separate fan capacitor is used, inspect and replace if bulged or leaking.
- Test motor: A technician can test motor windings for continuity. Replace the indoor blower motor or outdoor fan motor if open or shorted.
