Possible Causes
Dirty air filter restricting airflow, Evaporator or condenser coils clogged with dust, Low refrigerant charge due to leak, Failing compressor or stuck expansion device
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit before cleaning or opening panels.
Steps:
- Check mode and setpoint: Ensure the unit is in COOL mode, not FAN or DRY, and the set temperature is at least 5°F (3°C) below room temperature.
- Clean filter: Remove and wash the air filter. Let it dry completely before reinstalling.
- Clean coils: Remove front cover and outer cabinet. Gently clean dust from evaporator (front) and condenser (rear) coils with a soft brush or vacuum.
- Check airflow: Make sure supply and return vents are not blocked by curtains, furniture, or covers.
- Observe compressor: With the unit reassembled and running, listen for the compressor starting (a deeper humming sound). If the fan runs but the compressor never starts, the compressor, capacitor, or control board may be faulty.
- Professional service: If coils are clean and airflow is good but cooling is still weak, a technician should check refrigerant charge, compressor performance, and the capillary/expansion device.
