Possible Causes

Reversing valve coil failure or stuck valve, Low refrigerant charge, Outdoor coil heavily iced and not defrosting, Outdoor ambient sensor or coil sensor misreading

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Heat pump refrigerant components can be very hot or very cold. Do not touch bare copper lines.

  • Step 1 – Verify mode and setpoint: Ensure the unit is in HEAT mode and the set temperature is above room temperature.
  • Step 2 – Check outdoor unit in HEAT: In heating mode, the outdoor fan should run and the outdoor coil will be cold. If the outdoor unit does not run, note this.
  • Step 3 – Inspect for heavy frost: If the outdoor coil is completely iced over and never defrosts, defrost control or sensors may be faulty.
  • Step 4 – Listen for reversing valve change: When switching between COOL and HEAT, you should hear a brief whooshing sound from the outdoor unit. If not, the reversing valve may be stuck or its solenoid coil may have failed.
  • Step 5 – Technician repair: A technician should test the reversing valve coil, defrost sensors, and refrigerant charge, and may need to replace the reversing valve assembly or sensors.
