Possible Causes

Shorted or locked compressor, Faulty compressor drive on outdoor PCB, Incorrect supply voltage or loose power connections, Shorted outdoor fan motor causing high current

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off the breaker and verify power is off with a suitable tester before opening any electrical covers.

  • Check supply voltage: Have a qualified person measure line voltage at the outdoor unit terminals to ensure it matches the nameplate rating and is stable.
  • Inspect wiring: Open the outdoor control box and inspect for burnt wires, loose terminals, or signs of arcing. Tighten loose screws and replace damaged wires.
  • Check outdoor fan: Spin the fan blade by hand (power off). It should rotate freely. A seized fan can cause overcurrent; replace the fan motor if stiff or burnt.
  • If E5 remains: The compressor or inverter module on the outdoor PCB may be failing. This requires specialized testing and usually replacement of the outdoor main PCB or compressor by a professional.
