Possible Causes
Open or weak dual run capacitor, Loose capacitor terminals, Failed condenser fan motor drawing excessive current
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Shut off power at the disconnect and verify with a meter. Capacitors can shock even when power is off.
- Step 1 – Access capacitor: Remove the service panel and locate the dual run capacitor (usually a metal can with three terminals labeled C, FAN, HERM).
- Step 2 – Inspect visually: If the top is bulged or there is oil leakage, the capacitor is bad.
- Step 3 – Test capacitance: Discharge the capacitor, disconnect wires (mark their positions), and test with a capacitance meter. Replace if more than ±10% off rating.
- Step 4 – Reconnect and test: Install a Heil-approved replacement with the same µF and voltage rating, reconnect wires, restore power, and test operation.
