Possible Causes

Blocked condenser airflow, Dirty condenser coil, Failed condenser fan motor, High ambient temperature beyond design limits

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off and unplug the unit. Allow it to cool for at least 20–30 minutes before working near the condenser or compressor.

Steps:

  • Check placement: Ensure the unit is not placed against a wall or furniture blocking the hot air exhaust. Maintain at least several inches of clearance around all vents.
  • Inspect exhaust hose (portable units): Make sure the hose is not kinked, crushed, or excessively long. Shorten if possible and keep it as straight as you can.
  • Clean air filters: Remove and wash the intake filters with mild soap and water. Let them dry completely before reinstalling.
  • Clean condenser coil: Remove rear or side panels to access the warm condenser coil. Use a soft brush or vacuum with a brush attachment to remove dust and lint from the fins. Do not bend the fins.
  • Check condenser fan operation: Power the unit briefly (with covers in place where required for safety) and verify that the outdoor/condenser fan runs at full speed. If it does not start or is noisy and slow, the fan motor or capacitor may be failing and should be replaced.
  • Ambient temperature: If the room or exhaust area is extremely hot (e.g., small enclosed balcony), relocate the exhaust or unit to a cooler, better-ventilated area.
