Possible Causes

Outdoor coil below defrost temperature, Unit in automatic defrost cycle, Sensor detecting frost on coil

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Note: On many Honeywell heat pump models, H1 is an informational code indicating defrost or preheat, not a fault.

Steps:

  • Wait for cycle: Allow 5–15 minutes for the defrost or preheat cycle to complete. The unit should resume normal heating automatically.
  • Check outdoor conditions: In very cold or humid weather, frequent defrost cycles are normal.
  • Inspect outdoor coil (for split systems): Ensure the outdoor coil is not blocked by ice, snow, or debris. Clear obstructions carefully.
  • Service if abnormal: If H1 remains indefinitely and the unit never heats, there may be a sensor or control issue. Have a technician check the defrost sensor and control board.
