Hotpoint Short Cycling

Unit turns on and off frequently (short cycling), cooling in very short bursts.

Possible Causes

Oversized unit for room, Thermistor located too close to cold air discharge, Faulty temperature sensor, Control board logic fault

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Steps:

  • Check sizing: Compare the Hotpoint unit's BTU rating to the room size. An oversized unit will naturally short cycle; consider using a lower capacity unit.
  • Sensor placement: Ensure the ambient thermistor is not directly in the cold air stream. If it is, reposition it slightly away from the discharge so it senses average room temperature.
  • Clean filters and coils: Restricted airflow can cause rapid temperature swings near the sensor. Clean filters and coils.
  • Test sensor: If cycling is extreme, test and replace the ambient thermistor if readings are unstable.

Note: Persistent short cycling with correct sizing and a good sensor may indicate a control board issue.
