Possible Causes

Open or shorted evaporator thermistor, Thermistor dislodged from evaporator coil, Damaged sensor wiring harness, Failed main PCB sensor input

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect power before opening the cabinet. Sharp metal edges are present around the coil and chassis.

Steps to address E2:

  • 1. Remove front cover: Take off the front grille and air filter. On many Insignia window and portable units, the evaporator thermistor is clipped directly to the evaporator coil tubing or fins.
  • 2. Locate the evaporator sensor: Look for a small plastic-encased probe or bead sensor attached with a clip or tape to the metal coil near the air intake side.
  • 3. Check mounting: Ensure the sensor is firmly attached to the coil. If it has fallen off, reattach it using the original clip or a metal-safe clip so it makes good thermal contact with the tubing.
  • 4. Inspect wiring: Trace the sensor wires back to the main control board. Look for cuts, pinches, or melted insulation. Confirm the connector is fully seated on the PCB.
  • 5. Test the sensor (optional): With the unit unplugged, disconnect the sensor and measure resistance. Compare to the room sensor if they are the same part number; values should be similar at the same temperature. A reading of 0 Ω or infinite indicates a failed sensor.
  • 6. Replace sensor if needed: Install an OEM Insignia evaporator temperature sensor. Route wires away from the fan and sharp edges, and secure with cable ties.
  • 7. Control board check: If a new sensor does not clear E2, the main PCB may not be reading the sensor correctly. Replacement of the control board is typically required and should be done by a technician.
