Possible Causes

Blocked condenser airflow, Dirty condenser coil, Failed condenser fan motor, Faulty high-temperature sensor or thermal fuse

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the unit. Surfaces around the condenser and compressor can be very hot.

Steps to address E8:

  • 1. Check airflow: Ensure the rear of a window unit or the exhaust duct of a portable Insignia AC is not blocked. Straighten any kinks in the exhaust hose and keep at least 20–30 cm clearance around vents.
  • 2. Clean condenser coil: Remove the outer shell or rear panel to access the condenser coil. Use a soft brush or vacuum to remove dust and lint from the fins. For heavy buildup, use a coil cleaner rated for aluminum fins.
  • 3. Verify condenser fan operation: With covers reinstalled for safety, power the unit and observe the outdoor/condenser fan. It should start whenever the compressor runs. If the compressor runs but the fan does not, suspect a failed fan motor or capacitor.
  • 4. Inspect fan motor and wiring: Unplug the unit, then check the condenser fan motor harness and connector. Look for burned or loose connections. Replace the fan motor if it is seized or does not run on direct power (advanced test).
  • 5. Check temperature sensor: Locate the high-temperature sensor or thermistor near the condenser coil or compressor. Ensure it is properly attached and wiring is intact. Replace if physically damaged or if resistance tests open/shorted.
  • 6. Reset and test: After cleaning and repairs, allow the unit to cool for 30 minutes, then restore power and test. If E8 returns quickly, the main PCB or compressor may be overheating and should be evaluated by a technician.
