Possible Causes

Dirty outdoor condenser coil, Blocked airflow around outdoor unit, Overcharged refrigerant, Failed condenser fan motor or fan capacitor, Restricted metering device (TXV) causing high head pressure

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power at the outdoor disconnect and indoor breaker. High-pressure conditions can be dangerous; do not attempt to open the refrigerant circuit yourself.

  • Step 1 – Clear airflow: Remove leaves, grass, and debris from around the Keeprite condenser. Maintain at least 2–3 feet of clearance on all sides and 5 feet above.
  • Step 2 – Clean condenser coil: Remove the top grille if needed. Using a garden hose (no pressure washer), gently rinse the coil from inside out to remove dirt. Avoid bending fins.
  • Step 3 – Check outdoor fan operation: Restore power and observe the outdoor unit. The fan should start whenever the compressor runs. If the compressor hums but the fan does not spin, shut power off and inspect the fan motor and capacitor.
  • Step 4 – Inspect fan capacitor: With power off and capacitor discharged, look for bulging or leaking. Replace with a capacitor of the same µF rating and voltage if defective.
  • Step 5 – Professional service: If E4 persists after cleaning and confirming fan operation, a technician must check refrigerant charge, TXV operation, and high-pressure switch function. Do not attempt to add or remove refrigerant yourself.
