Possible Causes
Low refrigerant charge due to leak, Restricted filter-drier, Frozen evaporator coil from poor airflow, Faulty low-pressure switch or sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power to the system. Refrigerant handling requires EPA-certified technicians; do not open the sealed system.
- Step 1 – Check air filter and airflow: Replace a dirty return air filter. Ensure all supply and return registers are open and not blocked by furniture or rugs.
- Step 2 – Inspect evaporator coil: Remove the indoor coil access panel. If the coil is iced over, leave the system off and run the indoor fan only for several hours to melt ice. Correct airflow issues (dirty filter, blocked returns, closed registers).
- Step 3 – Visual inspection of lineset: Look for oil stains on refrigerant lines, at flare/braze joints, or around the outdoor unit – signs of a leak. Do not attempt to tighten or braze joints yourself.
- Step 4 – Reset and test: After thawing and restoring airflow, turn power back on and run cooling. If E5 returns, the system likely has a refrigerant or pressure switch issue.
- Step 5 – Call a technician: A Keeprite-qualified technician should check pressures, locate leaks, repair the sealed system, replace the filter-drier if needed, and verify low-pressure switch operation.
