Possible Causes
Seized or failing compressor, Weak or failed compressor start/run capacitor, High head pressure from dirty condenser coil, Voltage drop or poor electrical supply, Faulty compressor contactor causing arcing
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the outdoor disconnect and main breaker. High voltage and high current are present; use caution.
- Step 1 – Inspect condenser coil: Clean the outdoor coil thoroughly as described in other steps to reduce head pressure.
- Step 2 – Check fan operation: Ensure the condenser fan starts and runs smoothly whenever the compressor is energized. Replace a non-spinning or noisy fan motor.
- Step 3 – Inspect capacitor: With power off and capacitor discharged, visually inspect the dual run capacitor (often serving both compressor and fan). Replace if bulged, rusted, or leaking, matching µF and voltage ratings.
- Step 4 – Check contactor: Inspect the compressor contactor for pitted or burned contacts. Replace if heavily worn to ensure solid electrical connection.
- Step 5 – Professional compressor test: If E8 persists, a technician should measure compressor amperage, megger test windings, and verify supply voltage. A locked or shorted compressor typically requires replacement.
