Possible Causes
Locked rotor compressor, Shorted compressor windings, Incorrect line voltage, Weak start components (start kit), Faulty outdoor control board current sensing
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the disconnect and main panel. High voltage and high current are involved.
- Step 1 – Visual inspection: Check for burnt wiring at the compressor terminals and contactor. Repair any damaged conductors.
- Step 2 – Check capacitor and contactor: Inspect and replace a failed run capacitor or badly pitted contactor as needed.
- Step 3 – Listen for compressor: Restore power and briefly call for cooling while standing clear. If the compressor hums loudly and trips, shut power off immediately; it may be locked.
- Step 4 – Professional testing: A technician should measure compressor resistance, megger insulation, and verify supply voltage. If the compressor is locked or shorted, replacement of the compressor or entire outdoor unit is usually required.
