Possible Causes
Loose thermostat wiring, Incorrect thermostat type or configuration, Broken thermostat cable, Faulty thermostat
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power to the indoor unit before working on thermostat wiring.
- Step 1 – Remove thermostat cover: Gently pull the thermostat from its base and inspect the wiring.
- Step 2 – Tighten terminals: Ensure R, C, Y, G (and O/B if heat pump) wires are firmly attached and not shorting together.
- Step 3 – Check cable: Look for signs of damage where the cable enters the wall. If multiple conductors are available, you can move to unused wires if one is broken.
- Step 4 – Confirm thermostat settings: Verify the thermostat is configured for the correct system type (cool-only or heat pump) and number of stages.
- Step 5 – Test with jumper (advanced DIY): With power off, you can temporarily jumper R to Y and G at the indoor control board to see if the system runs without the thermostat. If it does, the thermostat or cable is likely faulty and should be replaced.
