Possible Causes
Broken low-voltage wire between indoor and outdoor units, Faulty thermostat not sending Y signal, Blown low-voltage fuse on indoor control board, Failed outdoor control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power to both indoor and outdoor units.
- Step 1 – Check indoor board fuse: Open the indoor unit panel and locate the low-voltage fuse (often 3–5A automotive style). Replace if blown, but if it blows again, there is a short that needs professional diagnosis.
- Step 2 – Thermostat test: Set thermostat to COOL and lower the setpoint. Verify that 24V is present between R and Y at the thermostat (requires meter and skill).
- Step 3 – Inspect low-voltage cable: Look for damage where the cable exits the house to the condenser. Repair or replace if cut or chewed.
- Step 4 – Outdoor board: If 24V is present at the condenser contactor coil but it does not pull in, the contactor is faulty. If no 24V reaches the condenser, the issue is upstream and may require a technician.
