Possible Causes
Tripped breaker, Blown fuse in outdoor disconnect, Loose or burned line connections, Failed contactor coil, Open low-voltage circuit from thermostat or indoor unit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off the main breaker before opening any electrical panels. Use a non-contact voltage tester if available.
- Step 1 – Check thermostat: Ensure it is set to COOL and the setpoint is below room temperature.
- Step 2 – Check breakers: Inspect the main panel for a tripped A/C breaker. Reset once if tripped. If it trips again, do not reset repeatedly—call a technician.
- Step 3 – Outdoor disconnect: Open the disconnect near the condenser. If it uses fuses, visually inspect and replace blown fuses with the same type and rating.
- Step 4 – Low-voltage check: If comfortable, remove the condenser control panel cover (power off) and inspect the low-voltage wires on the contactor (Y and C). Look for breaks or loose connections.
- Step 5 – Professional diagnosis: If power is present but the contactor does not pull in when cooling is called, the contactor coil or control circuit may be faulty and should be tested and replaced by a technician.
