Display shows E5 and the unit may stop cooling or heating (on heat-capable models).
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit. Overcurrent conditions can indicate serious electrical faults; do not bypass safety devices.
Steps to respond to E5:
- 1. Basic reset: Unplug the air conditioner for 10 minutes to allow internal overloads to reset. Plug back in and run on a lower fan speed and moderate temperature setting.
- 2. Check power supply: Ensure the unit is on a dedicated circuit with the correct voltage and amperage as specified on the Koldfront nameplate. Avoid extension cords.
- 3. Inspect condenser coil: Access the outdoor side of the unit and check for dirt, leaves, or debris blocking the condenser fins. Clean gently with a soft brush or low-pressure water (unit unplugged and fully dry before use).
- 4. Ventilation clearance: Make sure there is adequate clearance around the outdoor section (typically at least 12–24 inches) for proper airflow.
- 5. Listen for compressor behavior: If the compressor hums loudly and trips off quickly, it may be locked or failing internally.
- 6. Do not attempt compressor repair: Compressor and high-voltage circuit diagnosis (current draw, winding resistance) should be performed by a qualified HVAC technician.
Important: Repeated E5 errors indicate a serious electrical or refrigeration problem. Continued operation can damage the compressor.
