Possible Causes
Outdoor coil too cold, unit in defrost cycle, compressor warm-up delay, sensor detecting low coil temperature
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Note: H1 on many Koldfront heat pump models is an informational code indicating the unit is in defrost or warm-up mode, not a fault.
Steps:
- 1. Wait: Allow 5–10 minutes for the unit to complete its defrost or warm-up cycle. The code should clear automatically and heating should resume.
- 2. Check outdoor conditions: In very cold or frosty weather, frequent H1 indications are normal as the unit defrosts the outdoor coil.
- 3. Ensure airflow: Make sure the outdoor coil is not blocked by snow, ice, or debris.
- 4. If H1 never clears: If the unit stays in H1 and never heats, there may be a sensor or control issue. Power cycle the unit and, if unresolved, have a technician check the defrost sensor and control board.
