Possible Causes

Low refrigerant charge, Restricted airflow from dirty filter or coil, Blower not running at commanded speed, Faulty TXV causing low superheat

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off cooling at the thermostat and leave the indoor fan set to ON to thaw the coil. Do not chip ice off the coil.

  • 1. Thaw the system: Allow several hours for all ice to melt. Place towels or a pan under the air handler if necessary to catch excess water.
  • 2. Replace filter and check vents: Install a clean filter and ensure all vents are open. Restricted airflow is a common cause of freeze-up.
  • 3. Inspect coil cleanliness: Once thawed, inspect the evaporator coil. Clean as needed with a soft brush and coil cleaner.
  • 4. Restart and monitor: After cleaning and restoring airflow, restart cooling. If the coil begins to ice again or E413 returns, shut the system down and schedule a technician to check refrigerant charge and TXV operation.

Important: Repeated freeze-ups can damage the compressor and cause water damage around the air handler.
