Possible Causes
Locked rotor compressor, Weak or failed compressor start capacitor, Faulty compressor contactor, High supply voltage or loose connections
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disconnect power at breaker and outdoor disconnect. Capacitors can hold charge; discharge properly or have a technician handle.
- Inspect wiring and contactor: Remove the condenser access panel. Check the Luxaire contactor for burnt contacts or melted plastic. Tighten any loose lugs and replace the contactor if pitted or burned.
- Test the capacitor: Locate the dual run capacitor (often labeled for fan and compressor). If it is bulged, leaking, or rusted, replace it with the exact µF and voltage rating specified on the Luxaire data plate.
- Check for short cycling causes: Ensure thermostat is not rapidly cycling the unit (minimum 5 minutes between starts). Verify good airflow and clean coils to reduce compressor load.
- If compressor is locked: If the compressor hums loudly and trips E3 immediately even with a new capacitor, the compressor may be mechanically seized. This requires a professional to confirm with amp draw and megger testing and likely replace the compressor or outdoor unit.
