Possible Causes

Open or shorted discharge temperature sensor, Sensor detached from discharge pipe, Damaged sensor wiring, Faulty outdoor PCB sensor circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power and allow the outdoor unit to cool before touching refrigerant pipes; they can be extremely hot.

Steps to check:

  • 1. Locate discharge sensor: Open the outdoor unit panel. The discharge sensor is usually clipped to the small-diameter hot gas pipe exiting the compressor.
  • 2. Check attachment: Ensure the sensor is firmly clamped to the pipe and insulated as originally installed. Re-secure if loose.
  • 3. Inspect wiring: Look for damaged insulation, cuts, or pulled wires. Confirm the connector is fully seated on the PCB.
  • 4. Replace sensor: If the sensor is cracked, burnt, or F4 persists, replace it with the correct Midea discharge temperature sensor.

When to call a technician: If a new sensor does not resolve F4, the outdoor PCB may be faulty. A technician should test sensor resistance and PCB input.
