Possible Causes
Shorted compressor windings, Shorted IGBT module on inverter PCB, Wiring short between inverter and compressor, Mechanical compressor lock causing overcurrent
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: High voltage and high current components are involved. Only trained technicians should perform these checks. Disconnect power at the main disconnect.
Steps:
- Visual inspection: Open the outdoor unit and inspect the inverter PCB and compressor terminals for burn marks, melted insulation, or a burnt smell.
- Check compressor wiring: Ensure the compressor harness is intact and not rubbing against sharp metal edges.
- Resistance tests (technician): A technician should measure compressor winding resistance and insulation resistance to ground. Abnormal readings indicate a failed compressor.
- Replace faulty parts: If the compressor is shorted, it must be replaced and the system evacuated and recharged. If the compressor is good but the inverter module is damaged, replace the inverter PCB.
