Possible Causes
Open evaporator thermistor, shorted evaporator thermistor, loose sensor connection at control board, failed main control PCB
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disconnect power before removing covers. Coil fins are sharp; wear gloves.
Steps:
- Access the evaporator: Remove the front cover and air filter. On NewAir portables, remove the upper housing screws to expose the evaporator coil (the cold coil).
- Locate the sensor: The evaporator sensor is usually clipped directly to the evaporator tubing or embedded in the fins with a small plastic clip.
- Inspect the sensor and wiring: Check for corrosion, broken insulation, or a sensor that has fallen out of its clip and is hanging loose.
- Test resistance: At room temperature, measure resistance across the sensor leads. Compare to the room sensor if they are the same type; they should be in a similar range. Infinite or near-zero readings indicate failure.
- Re-seat connectors: Unplug and replug the sensor connector at the main control PCB to clear poor contact.
- Replace sensor: If faulty, install a new NewAir evaporator temperature sensor, ensuring firm contact with the coil and proper routing of the wire.
- Control board check: If a new sensor does not clear E2, the main control PCB may be defective and require replacement.
