Possible Causes

Compressor drawing excessive current, seized or tight compressor, shorted compressor winding, failing run capacitor, control board current-sense fault

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the unit. High voltage and stored charge in capacitors can be dangerous. If you are not comfortable testing live circuits, contact a qualified technician.

Steps:

  • Check power supply: Ensure the unit is on a dedicated circuit with correct voltage and not sharing with heavy loads. Low voltage can cause high current draw.
  • Inspect condenser coil and fan: Clean dust from the condenser coil and verify the condenser fan spins freely and runs at full speed. Overheating can increase compressor current.
  • Test run capacitor: Locate the compressor/fan run capacitor in the electrical compartment. Discharge it safely by shorting terminals with an insulated resistor, then test capacitance with a meter. Replace if more than ±10% out of rating or if bulged/leaking.
  • Compressor check: With power disconnected, measure resistance between compressor terminals (C, R, S) and from each terminal to ground. Very low resistance between terminals or any continuity to ground indicates a shorted compressor.
  • Replace parts: If the capacitor is bad, replace it with the exact µF and voltage rating. If the compressor is shorted or seized, the sealed system will require professional replacement.
  • Control board: If current draw is normal but E5 persists, the main control PCB current-sense circuit may be faulty.
