Possible Causes

Dirty condenser coil, Failed or open high-pressure switch, Blocked condenser airflow (debris around unit), Overcharged refrigerant

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power to the outdoor unit at the disconnect and the main breaker before touching anything. High voltage and refrigerant pressures can be dangerous.

  • 1. Reset power: Turn the thermostat to OFF. Switch the outdoor disconnect OFF and the indoor air handler breaker OFF for 5 minutes, then turn them back ON and set the thermostat to COOL. See if the E1 code clears.
  • 2. Inspect condenser coil: With power OFF, remove leaves, grass, and debris from around the Payne condenser. Check the coil fins for dirt buildup. If dirty, gently rinse the coil from the inside out with a garden hose (low pressure) avoiding electrical components.
  • 3. Check airflow clearance: Ensure at least 18–24 inches of clearance around the unit and 4 feet above. Remove any obstructions (bushes, lattice, stored items).
  • 4. Inspect high-pressure switch wiring: Locate the high-pressure switch on the small liquid line or compressor discharge line. Check for loose or damaged wires and connectors. Reseat any loose connections.
  • 5. Do NOT adjust refrigerant: If the code returns after cleaning and resetting, the system may be overcharged or have a restriction. This requires a licensed HVAC technician with gauges to verify pressures and replace the high-pressure switch if defective.

Stop and call a professional if you hear hissing, see oil stains on refrigerant lines, or the breaker trips repeatedly.
