Possible Causes

Low refrigerant charge (possible leak), Restricted indoor evaporator coil, Dirty or clogged air filter, Failed low-pressure switch

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off power at the breaker and outdoor disconnect before inspection. Refrigerant circuits are sealed; do not open them yourself.

  • 1. Check air filter: At the Payne air handler or furnace, remove the return filter. If it is dirty or collapsed, replace it with the correct size and airflow rating. Run the system again to see if the fault clears.
  • 2. Inspect indoor coil airflow: Ensure all supply and return registers are open and not blocked by furniture or rugs. Closed vents can reduce airflow and cause low pressure.
  • 3. Look at evaporator coil (if accessible): With power OFF, remove the access panel to the A-coil or slab coil. If the coil is iced over, leave the system OFF and set the thermostat fan to ON for 2–4 hours to thaw. If the coil is heavily dust-laden, schedule a professional coil cleaning.
  • 4. Reset system: After thawing and filter replacement, restore power and run in COOL. If E2 returns, there may be a refrigerant leak or a faulty low-pressure switch.
  • 5. Call a technician: A licensed HVAC tech must check refrigerant pressures, locate leaks, repair them, and recharge the system to Payne specifications, or replace the low-pressure switch if it is defective.
