Possible Causes
Failed compressor, Weak or open compressor start capacitor, Faulty compressor contactor, High supply voltage drop or loose connections
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Warning: Compressors draw high current. Always shut off power at the disconnect and breaker before opening panels.
- 1. Listen and observe: When the thermostat calls for cooling, listen at the outdoor unit. If you hear a humming sound but the compressor does not start, suspect the start capacitor or compressor.
- 2. Inspect contactor: With power OFF, remove the service panel. Visually inspect the contactor for burned or pitted contacts and melted plastic. If the contactor is badly burned, it should be replaced by a qualified person.
- 3. Check wiring connections: Verify that all compressor and capacitor wires are firmly attached and not burned or broken. Tighten loose spade connectors gently.
- 4. Feel the compressor shell: If recently running, the compressor may be very hot. Allow it to cool for 30–60 minutes with power OFF, then restore power and try again. If it starts after cooling, the compressor may be overheating due to a failing capacitor or poor airflow.
- 5. Do not short or bypass safety devices: Never bypass overloads or pressure switches. If the E3 code persists, a technician should test the compressor windings, measure capacitor microfarads, and replace the start/run capacitor or compressor as needed.
