Possible Causes

Low airflow across evaporator coil, Dirty air filter, Blower motor not running or running too slow, Low refrigerant charge

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off the system at the thermostat and breaker before removing panels.

  • 1. Check and replace filter: Remove the return air filter. If it is dirty, replace it with a new filter of the correct size. Avoid overly restrictive high-MERV filters unless the system is designed for them.
  • 2. Inspect blower operation: Set the thermostat fan to ON with cooling OFF. Confirm that the indoor blower runs smoothly and at normal speed. If the blower does not run or is weak, the blower motor or capacitor may be failing.
  • 3. Inspect evaporator coil for ice: Remove the indoor coil access panel. If you see ice on the coil or suction line, leave the system OFF and fan ON for several hours to thaw completely. Place towels or a pan to catch dripping water.
  • 4. Check supply and return vents: Make sure all vents are open and unblocked. Open closed dampers in branch ducts if accessible.
  • 5. Restart and monitor: After thawing and restoring airflow, turn COOL back on. If E4 returns, there may be a refrigerant issue or a faulty coil temperature sensor that requires professional diagnosis.
