Possible Causes
Severely dirty condenser coil, Blocked condenser fan, Failing condenser fan motor, Overcharged refrigerant
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power at the outdoor disconnect and breaker before cleaning or servicing.
- 1. Clean condenser coil: Remove top grille if needed (support the fan assembly without straining wires). Use a soft brush or vacuum to remove surface debris, then gently rinse the coil from inside out with a garden hose. Avoid bending fins and keep water away from electrical components.
- 2. Check condenser fan operation: Restore power and observe the fan. It should start promptly and run at full speed. If it starts slowly, stalls, or makes grinding noises, the fan motor or its capacitor may be failing.
- 3. Ensure airflow clearance: Maintain at least 2 feet of clearance around the unit and remove any covers or objects that restrict airflow.
- 4. Monitor performance: After cleaning, run the system for 30–60 minutes. If E8 returns, a technician should check refrigerant charge and measure compressor discharge temperature to rule out overcharge or internal compressor issues.
