Possible Causes
Stuck reversing valve, Faulty reversing valve solenoid coil, Low voltage to O/B reversing valve circuit, Control board failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power at the disconnect and breaker before working on the outdoor unit.
- 1. Thermostat mode check: Ensure the thermostat is correctly configured for O or B type reversing valve (Payne typically uses O for cooling-energized). Incorrect setting can cause mode faults.
- 2. Listen for valve shift: When switching between HEAT and COOL, you should hear a noticeable whoosh or click from the outdoor unit as the reversing valve shifts. If not, the solenoid may not be energizing.
- 3. Inspect solenoid coil: With power OFF, locate the reversing valve solenoid on the outdoor unit. Check that its wires are intact and firmly connected.
- 4. Technician diagnosis: A pro should measure voltage at the solenoid when calling for cooling/heating, test the coil resistance, and if necessary, replace the solenoid or the entire reversing valve assembly (a major refrigerant job).
