Possible Causes
Weak 24V control voltage from transformer, Loose low-voltage connections, Failing contactor coil, Undersized wiring or voltage drop
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power at the disconnect and breaker before opening the service panel.
- 1. Visual inspection: Remove the service panel and locate the contactor. Look for burned contacts, melted plastic, or loose coil wires.
- 2. Tighten low-voltage connections: Ensure the two small control wires on the contactor coil are firmly attached.
- 3. Check thermostat cable: Inspect the low-voltage cable entering the unit for damage from lawn equipment or animals.
- 4. Replace contactor (advanced DIY): If the contactor is visibly burned or pitted, it can often be replaced by a careful DIYer using an identical Payne-compatible part. Take photos of wiring before removal.
- 5. If problem persists: A technician should measure control voltage under load and test the 24V transformer and wiring for voltage drop.
