Possible Causes
Thermostat miscalibrated or stuck, Thermostat wiring short (Y to R), Undersized AC system, Low refrigerant or dirty coils reducing capacity
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Most steps are low-voltage; still turn off power before handling wiring.
- 1. Verify temperature reading: Compare the thermostat reading to an accurate room thermometer. If it is off by several degrees, recalibrate or replace the thermostat.
- 2. Check thermostat wiring: Remove the thermostat and inspect for bare wires touching between R and Y, which can cause constant cooling call.
- 3. Inspect coils and filter: Clean the outdoor condenser coil and replace the indoor filter to restore capacity.
- 4. Evaluate home load: On extremely hot days, an older or undersized Payne unit may run nearly continuously. If it still cannot reach setpoint, have a technician check refrigerant charge and system sizing.
