Possible Causes
Clogged condensate drain line, Algae buildup in drain trap, Cracked or rusted drain pan, Improper drain line slope
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power to the air handler to avoid electrical hazards near water.
- 1. Locate the drain line: Find the PVC drain exiting the indoor unit. Identify the cleanout or vent tee near the unit.
- 2. Clear the clog: Remove the cleanout cap and use a wet/dry vacuum on the outside drain termination to suck out debris. Alternatively, pour a mixture of warm water and a small amount of vinegar into the cleanout to help dissolve buildup.
- 3. Check drain pan: Inspect the primary and secondary drain pans for cracks or rust-through. If damaged, the pan may need replacement.
- 4. Verify slope: Ensure the drain line slopes downward away from the unit with no sags that can trap water.
- 5. Preventive maintenance: Add a few ounces of vinegar or a condensate pan treatment tablet to the pan at the start of each cooling season to reduce algae growth.
